IWD: Fubara, Wife Extol Resilience, Creative Ingenuities Of Women


Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, and his wife Lady Valerie Fubara, have commended the extraordinary resilience and creative ingenuities of women and girls, which they said have helped propel sustainable development in the society.

They made the remarks while congratulating women all over the world in celebration of the 2024 International Women's Day on Friday.

Speaking in a statement digned by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Boniface Onyedi in Govetnment House, Port Harcourt, the governor described women as unique creations and formidable assets endowed with the grace and capacity to foster peace and development in society.

He commended Rivers women for their unwavering support to his administration, and urged them not to rest on their oars but to continue praying for the peace of the state.

The governor further urged the women to continue to play their motherly role to save  the society from moral decay and rot.

Fubara, who highlighted the fundamental position women occupy in the development of any society, restated the commitment of his administration to giving priority attention to women empowerment and their active participation in governance.

He said that the government's position was in line with the theme of this year's celebration designed to call for action to Inspire Inclusion. 

He noted that the slogan: "Invest In Women: Accelerate Progress" couldn't be more apt than now, insisting that the government was implementing policies and programmes to aimed at investing handsomely in the empowerment of women and girls, so that they can better accelerate tge development of the communities, state and nation.

Similarly, wife of the Rivers State Governor, Lady Valerie Fubara, eulogised the women of Rivers State for their resilience and immeasurable contributions to the transfirmation of the society.

Lady Fubara, in a message to mark the 2024 International Women's Day, said "On this special occasion of the 2024 International Women's Day, I join the rest of the world to celebrate our esteemed women for their exceptional qualities and contributions to the well-being of our society”.

She noted that the theme of this year's celebration represents the true essence of the push for gender equality which is hinged on Inspiring Inclusion, as well as the captivating slogan “Invest In Women: Accelerate Progress”.

Lady Fubara emphasised that, without doubt, women have always been the epitome of strength and resilience which were valuable characteristics that accelerate progress in society.

She, therefore, called on women to always be resolute in what they do to impact the society positively, and to be bright lights that shine on everyone on all fronts and in all of life's endeavours.

In a related development, the First Lady, in cognizance of her commitment to fostering peace and empowerment, was honoured with the prestigious International Peace Ambassador award by the International Association for World Peace Advocates. 

Speaking at the award, Lady Fubara reiterated her support for the governor's endeavours in enhancing the quality of life for women and affirming family values in Rivers State.

Nigeria Lost N16.25trn To Oil Theft, NEITI Alleges

The Executive Secretary of Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), Ogbonnaya Orji, has revealed that Nigeria lost over N16.25trillion due to oil theft in the country. Orji, who made the revelation to the House Committee on Public Accounts, during an interactive session in Abuja, also claimed that $74.386billion was spent on fuel subsidy by successive administrations since 2011. According to him, the agency has compiled the actual amount paid as subsidy on yearly basis.  Orji claimed that the compilation was based on data collated and signed off by operators in the industry and other stakeholders. According to him, NEITI also uncovered over $8.3billion unremitted revenue by some privately owned oil firms and Federal Government-owned Agencies which was not paid into the Federation Account, in deviant to provisions in the extant financial regulations. Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has declared that the decisions taken by his administration in the evolving political crisis in the state were not borne out of fear, but for peace to reign in the state. The governor made this known while addressing Rivers people at the maiden state banquet held by his administration at Government House, Port Harcourt on Monday to celebrate the New Year. The governor's position was revealed in a statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Governor of Rivers State, Boniface Onyedi, on Tuesday.
