Assembly Crisis: We're On Top Of Security Situation, Police Assure Rivers People

The authorities of the Rivers State Police Command have assured residents and businesses in the state of their security and safety following eruption of political crisis in the state House of Assembly.

The police gave the assurance in a very tarse statement signed by its Spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, in Port Harcourt, on Monday, October 30.

The statement comes after the police had barricaded the entrance to the Assembly with over 17 patrol vans and armoured personnel carriers, and also shut teargas canisters on crowd of peaceful protesters who accompanied the state Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, to the Assembly in the morning hours of Monday.

The police were also reported to have shut water cannons and teargas at the governor while making his way on Moscow Road to the Assembly complex.

The governor was said to have walked from Government House to the complex after information had filtered in that part of the complex had been gutted by fire over the night on Sunday, while a crisis was also brewing among members of the Assembly.

The police statement read in full:

"The Rivers State Police Command is on top of the security situations that occurred at the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex.

"Consequently, full-scale investigation has been launched to unravel the circumstances surrounding the situations and take immediate policing actions against anyone found wanting.

"Further development will be communicated, please.

The 2023 World Economic Outlook of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has named the countries with highest debt – Sudan 256 per cent, Japan 255 percent, and Greece 168 percent. 2023 Census: We Won’t Ask Questions On Religion –NPC By Editor Ahead of the commencement of the 2023 census, the National Population Commission (NPC) on Wednesday said it will not ask questions on religious affiliation. In a statement on Wednesday by the Director of Public Affairs, Isiaka Yahaya, the commission said the decision to exclude religion along with ethnicity from the census questionnaire was taken in consideration of the sensitive nature of these issues within the Nigerian polity.
