The knife was said to have been stuck in her body, leaving the young battling for survival for hours, before she was rushed to a hospital.
Spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, who confirmed the incident, said that the lady has been arrested.
Iringe-Koko stated that the suspect was in police custody while the knife has been removed from the body of the 12-year old girl.
She added that the miracle girl was responding to treatment as investigation has gathered steam, and was ongoing.
This is even as the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability (CBRPA) has called for a thorough investigation into the incident.
National Coordinator of the organisation, Prince Wiro, said the suspect should be arraigned in court, if found culpable in the course of investigation.
He said that the level of cruelty and violence shown toward the 12-year old girl was unacceptable, and urged that the full weight of the law should be unleashed on those undermining human sanctity and rule of law.
Also, the immediate past President of Rumuodara Youth Association (RYA), Comrade Frank Weli, has commended the Okporo Police Division for the swift response in apprehending the suspect.
He said that the law enforcement agencies must do everything possible to ensure that justice was served in the circumstance.
Speaking, the sister of the victim, simply known as Oluchi, said: “My sister was washing plate outside. My mummy went to the market. The woman went to fetch water outside.
"Our corridor is always dark at night. In fact, if you are inside your house, you cannot see somebody outside. Also, the person outside cannot see anybody inside.
“She was standing outside with her water. She did not tell my sister not to carry the pot, who pick was among the plates she was washing or move around, so she does not jam (collide) with her with the pot.
“The girl carried the pot and entered inside. While doing that, both collided. The woman's bucket fell, she too fell. In anger, she started beating my sister. Everybody in the compound started begging her, explaining that my sister did not know she was at the corridor.
“After a while, she told my sister that she should sweep the water before she comes back from fetching another water. My sister agreed.
“She went back to fetch another water. While she was there, my sister continued to wash the plate. My sister later took broom to sweep the water.
“As my sister took broom to sweep the water out, she entered inside, carried kitchen knife and stabbed my sister.
“The head of the knife broke and the knife stayed in my sister’s body. We quickly called police to come. She entered inside her room, and locked her door. She opened the back door, and attempted to climb and jump the fence, with the aim of running away, but vigilant young men around quickly caught her and took her to the police.
“My sister is at the hospital now. They have brought out the knife. She stabbed her at the back. Doctors in the hospital operated my sister to bring out the knife," she narrated.
This is really wickedness. No matter what happened, how can you stab a 12year old with knife. She shouldn't go unpunished.
