'Shaku Shaku Chinese' Began As Freestyle Dance, Kyla Cole Speaks Out

A singer, Lekan Ibikunle, aka Kyla Cole, has said that his song, ‘Shaku Shaku Chinese’, which has gone viral on social media, especially Tik Tok, actually started as a freestyle.

He said, “It was just a freestyle in the studio, and I was in the mood to do music. I had wanted to do something unique, iconic and different because I believed that is what would make my sound stand out, since mostly everyone have the same sound in the Nigerian music industry. Shaku Shaku is a street slang, as well as a dance step.”

Describing the wide acceptance of the song as ‘a dream come true’, the singer said, “It felt like a dream when the single went viral on TikTok. I started getting phone calls informing him that the song, which I had released sometime ago, was becoming popular on TikTok, with over 150,000 videos made with it. Stars such as Ayra Starr and many social influencers also recorded themselves ‘grooving’ to the song.”

Cole added that he first fell in love with music when he was a teenager.

According to him, he has been influenced by artistes such as Wande Coal, Burna Boy, Davido, King Suuny Ade, D’banj, Wizkid and Brymo.
